Robert A. The contemporary study of international politics is plagued by state-centrism, conceptions of politics as an autonomous process, an overemphasis on the near term, and Eurocentrism. As a result, the field is poorly equipped to deal with issues like globalization, political and economic crises, systemic instability, or discontinuous change. Important work in the field of world system history, an alternative school of thought, is reviewed in detail, and the manner in which its proponents avoid these shortcomings is considered. Systemic-level theorizing, transdisciplinarity, treatments of the long historical term, and non-Eurocentrism are hallmarks of this school. Proponents of world system history face two methodological challenges: determinism and indeterminancy. Determinism is not evident in our review, but indeterminancy remains an issue.

The units consist primarily of states, which collectively constitute a system of states. Most systems theories treat the relationship between the international system and states as reciprocal, but explanatory preference is often given to the former in shaping the behavior and interactions of the latter. Systems theorizing remains an important approach to the study of international relations, but because individual theories are difficult to construct and empirically difficult to support, there is little agreement about the explanatory value of any of the particular theories discussed in this article. There is no single introduction to systems theory in international relations IR. The references in this section are general introductions to systems theory as it applies to politics in general Easton , or overviews of systems theory as parts of larger theoretical projects or surveys in IR.

Systems Theory in International Relations

International relations IR or international affairs IA , also known as international studies IS , global studies GS , or global affairs GA , is the study of politics , economics and law on a global level. Depending on the academic institution, it is either a field of political science , an interdisciplinary academic field similar to global studies , or an independent academic discipline that examines social science and humanities in an international context. In all cases, international relations is concerned with the relationships between political entities polities —such as sovereign states , inter-governmental organizations IGOs , international non-governmental organizations INGOs , other non-governmental organizations NGOs , and multinational corporations MNCs —and the wider world-systems produced by this interaction. International relations is both an academic and a public policy field, and so can be positive and normative , because it analyses and formulates the foreign policy of a given state. As a political activity, international relations dates from at least the time of Greek historian Thucydides c. The scope of international relations encompasses issues such as globalization , diplomatic relations , state sovereignty , international security , ecological sustainability , nuclear proliferation , nationalism , economic development , global finance , terrorism , and human rights. Studies of international relations start thousands of years ago; Barry Buzan and Richard Little consider the interaction of ancient Sumerian city-states, starting in 3, BC , as the first fully-fledged international system.

Foreign policy analysis allows us to better understand how political actors make policy decisions and how they relate to other foreign government and non-government entities. Foreign policy is a complex discipline wherein numerous actors work within structures both inside and outside the state to have an impact on the decision-making process. It is useful to have analytical process models to illuminate the dynamics in this field and help explain how states conduct their foreign policy, international relations and diplomatic endeavors. There are five main models in foreign policy analysis that will be explored in this article: the rational actor model, the bureaucratic politics model and the organizational process model—all three of which were developed by foreign policy analyst and scholar, Graham Allison, and outlined in his book, The Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis—as well as the inter-branch politics model and the political process model. In order for an international relations professional to effectively analyze foreign policy as a whole, it is necessary to determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of each model therein and understand the ways in which each approach has the potential to remedy the inadequacies of the others. The most widely cited foreign policy analysis approach is the rational actor model.

Power (international relations)

The opponents united to oust Gaddafi from power, but their loose alliance fell apart as the various groups sought different agendas and mistrusted each other for political and commercial interests. The post-Gaddafi era led to serious, unintended consequences, causing regional unrest, massive civilian displacement, and an environment conducive to terrorism and extremism. After 42 years of autocratic rule, the country remains in chaos and its post Gaddafi future still unclear. Gaddafi left the country without state structures and an efficient security apparatus, which has had a negative impact on the post-revolutionary process of setting up democratic political institutions and stabilizing the state.

Power in international relations is defined in several different ways. Modern discourse generally speaks in terms of state power, indicating both economic and military power. Those states that have significant amounts of power within the international system are referred to as small powers , middle powers , regional powers , great powers , superpowers , or hegemons , although there is no commonly accepted standard for what defines a powerful state. Entities other than states can also be relevant in power acquisition in international relations. Such entities can include multilateral international organizations , military alliance organizations like NATO , multinational corporations like Wal-Mart , [1] non-governmental organizations such as the Roman Catholic Church , or other institutions such as the Hanseatic League and technology companies like Facebook and Google.
