The relationship of theology to philosophy is much more difficult to determine, because it is much more complicated. The problems can here only be mentioned. If one understands philosophy as the discipline that attempts to explicate the totality of being, the difference between philosophy and theology becomes apparent.

This special issue aims to explore and reflect on the ways in which the relationship between philosophy and theology is conceived, problematised, and illuminated in existential or existentialist thought. We invite submissions for the topical issue of "Open Theology" www. In contributing to this discussion, papers could for example address the relationship between philosophy and theology through existential analysis of philosophically and theologically significant themes, such as freedom, paradox, sin, salvation, grace, reason and more; papers could also address this relationship by discussing the positions of specific existential or existentialist thinkers on this issue we understand this group of thinkers broadly, so as to include for example Augustine, Pascal, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Jaspers, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Camus, Tillich, Bultmann, Falque and others ; or papers could sketch what the very notion of existential analysis might tell us about philosophy and theology today. We invite submissions from the conference presenters and also from the authors who will not attend the conference. Because "Open Theology" is published in Open Access model, as a rule the publishing cost should be covered by Article Processing Charges APC paid by authors, their affiliated institutions, funders or sponsors.

Many of the doctrines central to Christianity have important philosophical implications or presuppositions. In this article, we begin with a brief general discussion of the relationship between philosophy and Christian dogma, and then we turn our attention to three of the most philosophically challenging Christian doctrines: the trinity, the incarnation, and the atonement. We take these three as our focus because, unlike for example doctrines about providence or the attributes of God, these are distinctive to Christian theology and, unlike for example the doctrine of original sin or the Real Presence of Christ in the eucharist, these have been the subject of a great deal of discussion over the past couple of decades. In the history of Christian theology, philosophy has sometimes been seen as a natural complement to theological reflection, whereas at other times practitioners of the two disciplines have regarded each other as mortal enemies. Some early Christian thinkers such as Tertullian were of the view that any intrusion of secular philosophical reason into theological reflection was out of order.

Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves cf. Ex ; Ps ; ; Jn ; 1 Jn In both East and West, we may trace a journey which has led humanity down the centuries to meet and engage truth more and more deeply. It is a journey which has unfolded—as it must—within the horizon of personal self-consciousness: the more human beings know reality and the world, the more they know themselves in their uniqueness, with the question of the meaning of things and of their very existence becoming ever more pressing. This is why all that is the object of our knowledge becomes a part of our life.
Qty : Please note there is a week delivery period for this title. The purpose of this volume is to offer an authoritative overview of the positive relationship between faith and reason, the latter understood as different mode of philosophy. Finally it will ground the overall project of "Religion and the University" firmly in different ecclesial communities within the Christian family and differing theological-philosophical orientations that might be trans-denominational. This absorbing colleaction of freshly thought out, often innovative and always richly documented essays covers the whole spectrum from the beginning until now: highly recommended. Through the examination of theological and philosophical traditions, this collection of essays by leading scholars demonstrates how human intellectual enquiry has been an attempt to respond to questions which, at their most profound and significant, are theological. Answering those questions has always required the deployment of philosophy as part of a dialectical conversation with the tradition of faith. In our current intellectual and cultural condition of fragmentation, these penetrating and informative essays by leading scholars help to articulate how we might once again share an intellectual vision which is theologically and philosophically coherent.
