Black Holes and Time Warps, Einstein's Outrageous Legacy - Thorne
It provides an illustrated overview of the history and development of black hole theory, from its roots in Newtonian mechanics until the early s. Over fourteen chapters, Thorne proceeds roughly chronologically, tracing first the crisis in Newtonian physics precipitated by the Michelson—Morley experiment , and the subsequent development of Einstein's theory of special relativity given mathematical rigor in the form of Minkowski space , and later Einstein's incorporation of gravity into the framework of general relativity. Black holes were quickly recognized as a feasible solution of Einstein's field equations , but were rejected as physically implausible by most physicists. Work by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar suggested that collapsing stars beyond a certain mass cannot be supported by degeneracy pressure , but this result was challenged by the more prestigious Arthur Stanley Eddington , and was not fully accepted for several decades. When the reality of objects which possess an event horizon finally achieved broad acceptance, the stage was set for a thorough investigation into the properties of such objects, yielding the surprising result that black holes have no hair —that is, that their properties are entirely determined by their mass, spin rate, and electrical charge. Proceeding separately from theoretical research into relativity, and with the refinement of radio astronomy , astrophysics began to produce unusual observations of extremely intense radio sources, which were apparently located outside of the Milky Way.
The active galaxy NGC is a well-known radio source Perseus A and a strong emitter of X-rays due to the presence of a black hole in the center of the galaxy. Fabian et al. X-ray astronomy has opened up access to the extremely hot and energetic components of the Universe. In the current cosmological paradigm, the universe is a living ecosystem, in which flows of gas into galaxies and black holes at their centers, and the subsequent release of energy back into the galaxies and their surroundings all play vital roles. X-ray observations have provided stunning evidence for these processes at work, unveiling how the major constituents of such an ecosystem can profoundly influence their overall evolution. Andrew Fabian, one of the most prolific and influential astronomers of our time, has been a leading figure in several major research areas in X-ray astronomy.

ISBN X. We will spend about half of our time on differential geometry. We will then take a "break" and address special relativity. The class will finish and climax with general relativity. We will deal at length with the differential geometry topics of curvature, intrinsic and extrinsic properties of a surface and manifold. We will briefly survey special relativity giving coverage that a physicist would consider fairly thorough, but which a geometer would consider a "shallow survey". We will cover general relativity as time permits.

This classic was first published in hardback in It is one of the best books written on the topic by one of the key players in the field. This book stands out for a number of reasons: 1 quality of the writing, 2 An excellent bibliography, and 3 very well done illustrations. I have lost count of the number of astronomy books published in the last years with poor quality photos or drawings. I wish Dr.
