Diversity, Oppression, and Social Functioning

Social workers advance human rights and social and economic justice through their practice and policy work. The Council on Social Work Education CSWE mandates that social work students develop knowledge, values, and skills in this area, as one of the core competencies of their professional training. Fifteen of these students also provided their understanding of the connection between their activities and this core competency. The findings revealed the types of activities that social work students engage in to develop and demonstrate readiness for practice. More than other core competencies, some students struggled to identify specific activities related to their practice setting, client population, or social work role. Human rights and social and economic justice are at the heart of the social work profession.

Teaches students how to work with a broad range of diverse or oppressed populations. Utilizes an affirmative practice approach to diversity practice. Introduces more case examples and expands the discussion of ethnic identity development as both psychological and sociological conceptual frameworks. Includes updated demographics and policy-related issues. Features a reconstructed chapter on Racism that focuses on African Americans and Caribbean Islanders. Highlights additional information related to Mexican Americans in the chapter on Latinos. His professional areas of scholarly interest include:health and mental health with particular focus on clinical practice, program design, planning and organization development in ethnic minority communities.

Using the "Person-In-Environment" PIE theoretical framework, this diversity practice text teaches students how to think about their personal reactions and assumptions about diversity and what constitutes cultural competent "assessment" and "intervention" when working with a broad range of diverse populations.

The diverse populations presented in the text are described within an ecological, strengths perspective.
