Natural and Manmade Disasters: Vulnerable Populations
This paper aims to provide graduate students, researchers, and government and independent agencies with an overview of disaster types. Disaster types have been the subject of research by and concern to academicians and to government and independent agencies. The paper summarizes the views of researchers and agencies. Disaster types are collected from several sources such as technical, general articles, internet web sites, and internal reports. Disaster definitions, criteria and types are reviewed.
The Tragic Effects of Man Made Disasters
A disaster is a serious disruption occurring over a short or long period of time that causes widespread human, material, economic or environmental loss which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources. They may even alter the course of history by broadly affecting entire populations and exposing mismanagement or corruption regardless of how tightly information is controlled in a society. Disasters are routinely divided into natural or human-made, although complex disasters, where there is no single root cause, are more common in developing countries. A specific disaster may spawn a secondary disaster that increases the impact. A classic example is an earthquake that causes a tsunami , resulting in coastal flooding. Some manufactured disasters have been ascribed to nature. Some researchers also differentiate between recurring events such as seasonal flooding, and those considered unpredictable.

They happen randomly and suddenly, and have been occurring since before recorded time — well at least natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, landslides, hurricanes and tornadoes. It was only a couple of hundred years ago with the invention of industry that people brought about unnatural man-made disasters.
Earthquakes, floods and landslides, etc. In recent years these hazards took toll of thousands of lives and caused massive destruction of property. These have adversely affected the vital sectors of our development as agriculture, communication, irrigation, power projects and rural and urban settlements. The time and cost overrun in some cases have been enormous but their indirect impact on our economy has never been calculated. The unique geo-climatic conditions have exposed this country to natural catastrophes. Disasters can be defined as a sudden, accidental event of great magnitude that causes considerable damage to life and property.
