Here we build on this framework to explore the monitoring of EBV classes at the species level: species populations, species traits and community composition. We start by discussing cross-cutting issues on species monitoring such as the identification of the question to be addressed, the choice of variables, taxa and spatial sampling scheme. Next, we discuss how to monitor EBVs for specific taxa, including mammals, amphibians, butterflies and plants. We show how the monitoring of species EBVs allows monitoring changes in the supply of ecosystem services. We conclude with a discussion of challenges in upscaling local observations to global EBVs and how indicator and model development can help address this challenge. People have monitored and managed species for thousands of years, but national and international biodiversity monitoring is a relatively recent phenomenon. By the end of the s, some governments had established monitoring agencies, mostly taxon-specific.
British Wildlife is the leading natural history magazine in the UK, providing essential reading for both enthusiast and professional naturalists and wildlife conservationists. Published eight times a year, British Wildlife bridges the gap between popular writing and scientific literature through a combination of long-form articles, regular columns and reports, book reviews and letters. Conservation Land Management CLM is a quarterly magazine that is widely regarded as essential reading for all who are involved in land management for nature conservation, across the British Isles. CLM includes long-form articles, events listings, publication reviews, new product information and updates, reports of conferences and letters. Please note January : the publisher has announced that the paperback version of this book has been cancelled. A key reference, compiled by conservation practitioners Hill, Fasham and Tucker are environmental consultants, Shewry and Shaw are at Scottish Natural Heritage, the governmental nature conservation agency for Scotland. Biodiversity is recognised to be of global importance, yet species and habitats continue to be under increasing pressure from human-induced influences.

Handbook of biodiversity methods : survey, evaluation and monitoring
Numbering more than nine thousand described species, ants rank among the most abundant and widespread of insect groups-the collective weight of ants in tropical forests and grasslands may constitute as much as 10 to 15 percent of the animal biomass. Written by thirty leading ant biologists, this comprehensive book describes procedures for surveying the diversity of ground-dwelling ants. It introduces a standardized protocol for collecting ant samples in any part of the world and for conducting repeated sampling over time, which enables researchers to analyze global and long-term patterns. Covering aspects of ant ecology and taxonomy, species identification, specimen preparation, and sources of sampling equipment, this book provides the necessary foundation for readers from a wide range of backgrounds.
